Grout is not waterproof. Neither is tile. What keeps water out of your walls is the membrane underneath.
Sheet or liquid membranes
Both work when installed properly. We use a sheet membrane on walls and a bonded liquid membrane at corners and penetrations.
The flood test
Before tiling, we plug the drain, fill the shower floor with water and leave it for 24 hours.
If the water level has not dropped by morning, we tile. If it has, we find out why.
