Rattan and cane: a buyer’s guide

Rattan is back, and for good reason. It is light, strong, sustainable and adds instant warmth. But quality varies enormously.

Look at the weave

Tight, even weaving with no loose ends is a sign of skilled hands. Cheap pieces often use plastic binding at the joints.

Keep it away from radiators

Natural fibres dry out and crack near direct heat. Wipe with a damp cloth twice a year.

One great rattan piece beats a room full of cheap ones.

Style it with structure

Pair rattan with clean-lined oak, linen and dark metal to keep it modern.
